Carved out of Kangra district on 1 September 1972. Una is the lowest-lying district in Himachal — the Beas leaves the state near Mirthal at about 300 m — and its plains and Shivalik duns make it the most 'Punjab-like' part of the state in climate, crops and dialect.
The territory belonged to the Katoch offshoot states of Jaswan (capital Rajpura, founded 1170) and Kutlehr, together with parts of Hoshiarpur district transferred in 1966.
- Chintpurni (Chhinnamastika) — a Shakti Peeth and the district's principal pilgrimage.
- Dera Baba Rudru, Dhaulagiri Dhar, and the Swan river — the 'sorrow of Una', now channelised.
- Gagret and Mehatpur industrial areas; the Una–Hamirpur–Bilaspur rail alignment.
- Second highest literacy rate in the state after Hamirpur.
