Event
The Revolt of 1857 in the hills
The rising in the hills began at Kasauli, where Subedar Bhim Singh led about eighty men of the guard, seized the treasury, and joined the Nasiri battalion at Jutogh near Shimla. The Europeans of Shimla fled to Kotgarh and Junga.
- Pratap Singh and Vir Singh of Kullu were hanged at Dharamshala on 3 August 1857.
- Ram Prasad Bairagi was executed at Ambala.
- Bushahr was the only hill state that neither assisted the British nor supplied troops; Raja Shamsher Singh sheltered Bhim Singh.
- Most other rulers — Patiala, Nalagarh, Bilaspur, Keonthal, Bhagat, Mandi, Sirmaur — actively helped the British and were rewarded with sanads, titles and grants in 1858–60.
