Gorkhas defeat Sansar Chand at Mahal Morian

Resentful of Sansar Chand's exactions, the hill chiefs — led by Kahlur — invited the Gorkhas in. At Mahal Morian (Hamirpur) in 1806, Amar Singh Thapa defeated Sansar Chand, who fled first to Sujanpur Tira and then into Kangra fort, which he held under siege for four years.

The Gorkhas overran the Kangra valley but could never take the fort. In 1809 Ranjit Singh's intervention drove them back across the Sutlej for good.
