The Pajhota agitation
In the Pajhota area of Sirmaur, peasants refused to give men or money for the British war effort that their raja Rajendra Prakash was supporting. The slogan was 'Bhai do, na pai' — neither brother nor penny.
Led by Vaid Surat Singh, with Laxmi Singh, Miyan Chuchu and Basti Ram Pahari, the movement kept the state administration out of the area for several months. It is treated as an extension of the Quit India Movement of August 1942 and is the most important single episode of the hill freedom struggle after Dhami.
