The Punjab Reorganisation Act doubles Himachal
The Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966 transferred the hill areas of Punjab to Himachal Pradesh on 1 November 1966 — the day Haryana was created and Chandigarh made a Union Territory.
- Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti and Shimla districts in full.
- Nalagarh sub-division of Ambala district.
- Parts of Una tehsil of Hoshiarpur district, and the Santokhgarh–Amb area.
- Dalhousie and Bakloh from Gurdaspur district.
Himachal now had ten districts and, for the first time, included Shimla town. The transfer also brought the Bhakra and Pong works and the bulk of the state's population.
