Treaty of Segauli (Sugauli)
The treaty was signed on 2 December 1815 and ratified on 4 March 1816. Nepal gave up all territory west of the Kali river — Kumaon, Garhwal and the hill states up to the Sutlej — surrendered the disputed Tarai, accepted a British Resident at Kathmandu, and conceded the right to recruit Gorkhas.
Consequences for Himachal: the hill states were restored to their rajas, but as protected states holding British sanads — internal autonomy, no external relations, no war, succession subject to recognition. Some territory was retained directly: the Subathu, Kotgarh, Kotkhai tracts and the ground that became Shimla. A Superintendent of Hill States was appointed, with his seat at Subathu.
