Trigarta founded by Susharma Chandra

Trigarta — the land of three rivers — is the oldest named polity in the region. Tradition credits its founding to Susharma Chandra, who in the Mahabharata attacked Virata, king of Matsya, on the Kaurava side, and who is said to have built the fort of Nagarkot (Kangra).

Panini (5th century BCE) mentions Trigarta and calls its people Ayudhajivi sangha — a confederacy living by arms. Trigarta coins are square, with Brahmi and Kharoshthi legends.
