Gobind Sagar

TypeReservoir

Gobind Sagar, formed by the Bhakra dam on the Sutlej at Bilaspur, is the largest man-made lake in Himachal Pradesh. The dam is a straight gravity structure about 226 m high, its foundation stone laid in 1948 and the project completed and dedicated in 1963.

The old town of Bilaspur was submerged by the rising reservoir and rebuilt on higher ground — the standard case cited whenever a question asks about development-induced displacement in the state. Naina Devi temple overlooks the lake from above.
