Amar Singh Thapa
The architect of Gorkha expansion west of the Kali. Between 1790 and 1805 he overran Kumaon, Garhwal, Sirmaur and the Shimla hills up to the Sutlej, and in 1806 defeated Sansar Chand at Mahal Morian.
He besieged Kangra fort for four years without taking it, and was driven back across the Sutlej by Ranjit Singh in 1809. In the Anglo-Gorkha war he was outmanoeuvred by Ochterlony, who detached the hill chiefs from him one by one, and capitulated at Malaun on 15 May 1815.
