The premier Simla Hill State, holding the land on which Shimla itself was built. The site of the future summer capital was Keonthal territory; it passed to the British after the Gorkha war, and the rest of the state was surrounded by the growing station.
Keonthal had a cluster of feudatories — Koti, Theog, Madhan, Ghund, Ratesh — and its ruler was the senior chief at the durbars of the Simla Hill States.
- Shimla's land came from Keonthal and Bhajji, with the grants confirmed after 1815.
- Junga remained the state capital; the palace survives.
