An offshoot of Kahlur founded in 1100 by Ajai Chand, guarding the Sutlej where it leaves the hills. Its fort of Ramgarh and the fort of Malaun nearby became the decisive ground of the Anglo-Gorkha war.
Nalagarh was administratively attached to Ambala district of Punjab, and so came to Himachal only with the Punjab Reorganisation Act on 1 November 1966, not in 1948 — a distinction that is regularly tested.
- Malaun fort — where Amar Singh Thapa finally capitulated to David Ochterlony in May 1815.
- The Baddi–Barotiwala–Nalagarh (BBN) industrial belt now occupies the old state's plains.
