Tourism
- Tourism contributes a large share of GSDP and is the biggest rural employer after agriculture.
- Circuits: Shimla–Kufri–Chail–Narkanda; Manali–Rohtang–Lahaul; Dharamshala–McLeodganj–Palampur; Dalhousie–Khajjiar–Chamba; Spiti (Kaza–Tabo–Key); Kinnaur (Sangla–Kalpa); the Dev Bhoomi temple circuit; Paonta Sahib and Rewalsar for Sikh and Buddhist pilgrimage.
- Adventure — paragliding at Bir Billing (among the best sites in the world), trekking, rafting on the Beas at Kullu, skiing at Solang and Narkanda.
- Religious tourism is the largest single segment by footfall — Naina Devi, Jwalamukhi, Chintpurni, Chamunda, Baba Balak Nath (Deotsidh).
Policy and problems
- Carrying capacity — the Rohtang orders of the National Green Tribunal capping vehicle numbers are the standard case.
- Solid waste and sewage in Shimla, Manali and McLeodganj; the Shimla water crisis of 2018.
- Home-stay policy as a way to spread income to villages; the HP Tourism Development Corporation.
- New airports and the Bhanupli–Bilaspur–Leh and Una–Hamirpur rail alignments are the connectivity questions.
